We Need to Cover the Most Needy, Not Able-Bodied Adults

Proponents of Obamacare Medicaid expansion have asked Virginians to ignore the facts, telling us: “Who you gonna believe - me…or your own eyes?”

Here are some facts:

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion has exceeded projected costs by 110%

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion has forced many states to dramatically hike taxes

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion will force the state to cut education and other priorities

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion makes it harder for vulnerable recipients to find a doctor

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion provides more money for childless, able-bodied adults

FACT: Obamacare Medicaid Expansion is out of control, accounting for 10% of the federal deficit

Since Obamacare was enacted, 31 states have adopted Medicaid expansion and the evidence underscores the fact that Medicaid expansion has been a disaster. Some examples: Alaska increased taxes; Ohio had to cut programs; Illinois passed income tax hike; Oregon pushing a tax increase; Maine forced to choose between cutting programs or increasing taxes; and Kentucky pleaded with the federal government for relief as Medicaid expansion will cost “$1.2 billion in new spending…jeopardizing funding for education, pension obligations, public safety and traditional Medicaid programs for our most vulnerable citizens.”

John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”  And the facts and evidence are clear: Medicaid expansion has left states across the country with budget shortfalls, forcing them to raises taxes and/or divert funding from traditional Medicaid populations, education, and public safety.  Why would we do it here in Virginia?
