Knives Can Cut Deep

It’s been a crazy year of politics nationally and locally. Unfortunately, the ear-splitting noise coming from the media can cause us to lose perspective on what’s truly important.  I often have to remind myself to take a step back from my daily routine to look for ways to help others who face much greater challenges.

One of those opportunities occurred right about the time I was getting involved with public policy at The Middle Resolution, I experienced something that had a profound impact on my life.  This event was one of the primary reasons I decided to accept the responsibility of expanding the influence of The Middle Resolution and our mission.

Back in 2011, I volunteered as a senior counselor with a ministry called Camp Hope. In my group of 10- and 11-year-old boys, one of the boys had tremendous difficulty getting along with others. One day, this boy decided to sneak off into the woods. When I finally found him, he was on his knees sobbing uncontrollably. After he gathered himself, I asked him about his difficulties and if anyone had ever taught him how to deal with conflict.  Suddenly, for the first time that week, he looked me directly in the eye and said, “Craig, in my house we use knives to deal with conflict!” He then turned over his hand, exposing a 6-inch scar running up his forearm.  At that moment I realized I had no idea the trauma these kids deal with on a daily basis. That experience shook me to my core! I am constantly reminded of the horrendous conditions some children wake up to every single day of their lives.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that a century of misguided public policy has trapped children in a life of poverty and hopelessness. Improving the lives of all Virginians through elections and public policy, especially for those who live in poverty, is one of our main drivers at The Middle Resolution.

Everyone has a unique ability to help Virginia become a state that advances opportunity and freedom for everyone. But it requires all of us to reflect on our gifts and resources and evaluate where we can help.

As the year closes out, I hope you will enjoy the holidays and, at the same time, share with friends and family how we can make a difference in the lives of others. It will be the greatest gift you will ever receive.

It's Up to You: We rely on the generous support of people like you to help support candidates across Virginia.
